Dr Ian Cline, Dental Surgeon, will lead this 2 day long course hands-on course designed for Dentists who would like to improve their knowledge and develop their skills to enable them to provide safe, effective treatment.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • To enhance clinicians’ understanding of functional occlusion and its relevance to everyday dental practice.

  • To develop the ability to diagnose, manage, and prevent occlusal and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) effectively.

  • To provide hands-on experience in assessing occlusal relationships and designing appropriate splint therapies.

  • To integrate occlusal principles into restorative, orthodontic, and prosthodontic treatment planning.

  • To increase confidence in managing patients presenting with occlusal instability, parafunction, and TMJ pain.

  • Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this 2-day course, participants will be able to:

    Day 1 — Occlusion & TMJ Fundamentals

    Knowledge & Understanding

  • Describe normal functional occlusion and the role of the TMJ and musculature in mandibular movement.

  • Identify the key features of centric relation, intercuspal position, and occlusal vertical dimension.

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of occlusal disharmony and TMJ dysfunction.

  • Understand the multifactorial nature of TMDs — including biomechanical, psychological, and parafunctional factors.

  • Differentiate between adaptive and pathologic occlusal changes.

    Practical Skills

  • Perform a structured occlusal and TMJ examination, including muscle palpation and joint movement assessment.

  • Record accurate jaw relationships using facebow transfer and bite registration techniques.

  • Analyse mounted study casts to assess occlusal relationships.

    Day 2 — Splint Therapy & Clinical Management

    Knowledge & Understanding

  • Explain the rationale behind different occlusal splint designs and their indications (stabilisation, repositioning, soft splints, etc.).

  • Understand the principles of occlusal equilibration and when (and when not) to adjust occlusion.

  • Appreciate the role of splint therapy in managing parafunction, bruxism, and TMJ pain.

  • Discuss evidence-based protocols for conservative management of TMD.

  • Integrate occlusal and TMJ considerations into complex restorative and prosthodontic cases.

    Practical Skills

  • Design and adjust an occlusal splint for a range of clinical scenarios.

  • Assess splint fit, comfort, and function using clinical checkpoints.

  • Develop a management plan for a patient with TMJ dysfunction, including when to refer for specialist care.

  • Implement a follow-up and review protocol for splint therapy patients.
